Scag Power Equipment has been producing heavy-duty, commercial mowers for over 20 years. This gives us a great deal of experience in what really works and what doesn't. For instance, our testing shows that ball bearings do not work well in cutter drive spindles. They are not as strong and can not handle the load like a tapered roller bearing.

We listen to our customers and are constantly making changes to meet their needs. In fact, every Scag mower receives many improvements and enhancements each model year. Even the smallest improvements are important in creating the best commercial mowers on the market. This constant product evolution has enabled us to retain our title as the premiere commercial mower line in the industry. You can find less expensive mowers. As with anything, you get what you pay for.

DESIGN AND TESTING

We employ an elite group of research and development personnel, designers and engineers dedicated to producing commercial mowers that cut faster, cut better, last longer and ultimately, make you more profitable. Computer Aided Design and Pro-E combined with hands-on fabrication are utilized in the initial creation of every product. Every Scag model is operated extensively in special laboratories that utilize sophisticated computer testing equipment. This initial testing step allows us to closely monitor mower performance and quickly identify any potential improvements that can be made. We also use test facilities in various locations around North America to prove the mowers in various climates and grass types.

After these initial steps are completed, we build numerous prototype mowers for use by landscapers, just like you, from all over the country. These landscapers operate the mower for a full cutting season and provide us with their feedback. During this real world field testing, we keep in close contact with these landscapers gathering vital information on mower performance, ergonomics, etc. Once the cutting season has been completed, we take the suggestions/feedback from the landscapers and implement these changes into the product before it goes into full scale production. This allows us to come to market with a better performing, more refined product from day one.

But it doesn't stop there. We continually enhance the performance of our products. Even when it seems that they can't get any better. We have added dynamometer test machines to the end of our Tiger lines to ensure that the hydraulic system is fully primed and ready for action when it arrives at the dealership. Each Sabre Tooth Tiger, Turf Tiger, Wildcat and Tiger Cub is run at the end of the assembly line before crating. The engine RPM is set, fluids are topped off, electrical system is tested, tracking is set, hydraulic system is put under load, deck level and pitch are set and the unit is checked for any oil leaks. Our mowers already lead the industry in productivity, reliability, heavy-duty construction, and overall value. QUALITY AND CONSTRUCTION

Scag Commercial Mowers are fabricated at our parent company, Metalcraft of Mayville, Inc., the largest independent manufacturer of commercial power equipment in North America. Metalcraft manufactures the Scag product in its 750,000+ square foot facilities. State of the art laser cutting machines, punches, presses, brakes, robot and certified manual welders and top notch, highly-skilled employees ensure that every Scag is built to the highest standards. This quality is evident in the construction and design of every mower we build. It's hard to find a light gauge piece of steel on our mowers. In fact, every "Scag Gold" component on our mowers starts as a flat piece of steel (except for the wheels). Sheet metal comes in one end of the factory and the world's best commercial mowers go out the other end.

Did you know that every Scag belt is constructed with Kevlar cords for superior strength and long life? Compare that to the standard, fabric/polyester cords used by the majority of the industry. Yes, Scag belts cost more. They are worth it because they last longer. When you figure in what downtime costs, they are well worth the extra investment. You will not find a plastic pulley on our mowers. All Scag pulleys are made from cast iron or split steel for strength and longevity. High load pulleys utilize a taper lock design for maximum holding power and easy service. Take a look at our cutter deck spindles. They feature cast iron housings for strength. They are fully grease-able, allowing you to add new grease and purge any foreign material such as dirt or moisture. There is a relief valve to prevent over-greasing and damage to the seals. Every spindle features a matched set of Timken tapered roller bearings. Tapered roller bearings carry 50% more load than a less expensive ball bearing. They can also handle high side loads, unlike ball bearings. The spindle also features a 1-1/8" hardened steel shaft, hardened blade spacers and washers. And last but not least, every Scag spindle is assembled, greased and torqued by hand. Nobody builds a better spindle. It is a fine example of how we build every Scag mower.

Our dedication to quality and construction can easily be seen with BDP-16 hydraulic pumps used on the full-size Turf Tiger mowers. Other brands use a BDP-10 pump with 60% less displacement on mowers of the same size. The BDP16 features larger bearings and other design features that will ultimately extend the life of the hydraulic system, not to mention provide increased performance. Obviously these 16cc pumps cost more that the 10cc model however it is a better component for the application. Every Turf Tiger comes standard with auxiliary hydraulic oil coolers. Again, it would be less expensive to manufacture a mower without them but the coolers will increase the hydraulic system life, adding value to your investment. Scag customers expect nothing less than the best to be put into every Scag mower. We do our best to not only meet, but exceed that expectation.

Compare our main frame construction to any other company in the commercial market. Make note of the gauge thickness of the steel that is used. Inspect the quality, consistency and frequency of the welds. Where other companies use a single piece of 7 gauge steel, we use a layer of 7, 10 and 11ga. steel for the same application. Where others use a single tube design, we use a double tube design. With that said, it should be noted that our mowers may weigh more than our "competitors". This is due to the heavier steel construction. We compensate for this extra weight by using wider tires to lower the pounds per square inch on the ground.

Is it overkill? Some may think so, however we do not. Do things like our Kevlar belts, high strength pulleys, cutter deck spindles and heavy steel construction make our mowers go faster? Not really. Does it make them last longer, provide you with less downtime and more value for your dollar? Absolutely. Would you pay a little more for something that will last an extra year, two, or more? Would you pay more for better components and overall quality? If you answered yes, Scag is the mower for you.

PERFORMANCE AND PRODUCTIVITY

All of our mowers are built to enable you to do more in less time. For example: A 48" hydro-drive walk-behind can cut 15 acres a day (1.9 acres per hour). That's with a 20% allowance for overlap and cutting at 4mph. A 48" Tiger Cub can cut 21 acres a day (2.6 acres per hour) with a 20% allowance for overlap and cutting at 6mph. A Sabre Tooth Turf Tiger with a 72" cutter deck can cut 32 acres per day (4 acres per hour). Of course, these numbers are dependent upon the conditions you are operating in. You may be able to go faster. You may have to go a little slower. Whatever your conditions, Scag mowers allow you to be more productive, adding to your bottom line. This is easily seen in our Advantage cutter deck design, 10mph+ ground speeds, high performance engine options, super fast blade tip speeds, and special attention to operator comfort. Operator comfort is an important element of productivity. At the end of an eight or ten hour day, an operator will start to slow down. Having equipment that is easy to use and comfortable lowers the operator's fatigue level. That means a more consistent, productive and safer operator.

We understand the importance of "no downtime" and what it means to your business. Because of this, we sell our products through a worldwide distributor and dealer network. Every distributor of Scag equipment has their own parts, technical service and sales departments to better serve the Scag dealer and ultimately you, the Scag customer. Using distribution ensures local parts availability and it gives the Scag dealer a local source for technical service, parts and sales support. We also offer overnight parts shipment direct from the factory to the dealer in the unlikely event that a part is not available at the local distributor. Scag and its distributors provide technical training to their dealers via the Internet, video repair training, manuals, and hands-on technical service schools. We provide one of, if not the largest, 24/7 Internet technical support site for all Authorized Scag Dealers. This site is updated and maintained directly from the Scag factory ensuring information is current and dealers are kept aware of the latest information.
